Step 1

Make cookies. Use our best sugar cookies recipe or a recipe of your choice. You do not need to fridge the dough before cutting. Roll out about 4mm and use a rounder cutter to cut out. Bake and cool. The recipe should make about 24 cookies.

Step 2

Prepare Royal Icing. Make icing following the recipe. Divide icing into 3 bowls and tint. Bowl 1 – green, bowl 2 – yellow, and bowl 3 – red. Remember, the ladybug colors are up to you.

Thin Icing. Getting the right royal consistency can be a bit tricky especially if it’s your first time, but with more practice it  gets easier. Visit our page on royal icing consistency for some tips.

Thin yellow and green to create a flow. Divide green icing into 2 portions. Thin portion 1 into a flow but portion 2 should be slightly heavier. Use it to outline edges of cookies before flooding.

Step 4

Decorating cookies. Use thinned green icing (portion 2) and tip 2 to outline your cookie. Immediately decorate with the yellow and flow green. Allow to dry a few hours or overnight.

Step 5

Here green ribbons are used for the antennas.

Step 6

Note: If you want the antennas on the head of your ladybug, create the holes before baking. Use a tiny cookie cutter or turn over your number 2 piping tip and use that as a cutter.
